Periods, Gym class, UGH. Help please?! :( thank you sooo much.?

I’m starting gym class tomorrow, and I don’t know what to do about my period. I am still getting used to periods, but i have quite a heavy flow. I use overnight ultra thin pads normally to school, but now i’m starting gym this semester, and i don’t know what to do about all the running and physical exercise while using pads. I am superrrr scared of tampons, they just don’t work for me. They make me really nervous and i tremble and, well, they’re just out of the question. So, i need help? Tips on using pads while running the mile, doing intense gym work, having a heavy flow, AND a male teacher! :( Please help, i’m so scared, and my mom says that she can give me a note to give to my teacher on my heavy days, but 3 out of 7 of my days are heavy, and i’m not gonna give him a note 3 days a month saying “sorry i’m on my period, can’t do any gym stuff, so, um, yeah, err, bye.” I don’t want him to know about my period!! Then again, how am i supposed to run the mile/do any gym stuff on my heavy flowing periods?

Also, i don’t use big bulky pads cause i don’t want them to show (i use ultra thin overnights, like i said.) are thinner pads less absorbent/less protection than thick ones?

Also, should i change my pad right before/after gym class? i usually change once in the morning, once in the middle of the day, and then when i get home from school, but i don’t know if i should change my little “schedule” lol now that i have gym class.

Also, is it okay if i (somehow get the courage) to tell my teacher i can’t do gym on my heavy days, or at least i can’t do the mile. what should i tell him? what should i tell people who ask? we only run the mile on wednesdays…would/could i have to make it up later?

thank you so much! sorry about the longgg question, but i’m totally freaking out. :( (

you should change before gym class and you should also where a one piece swimming suit under your gym clothes to keep the pad in place. don’t worry I’m a girl. I know this stuff. It’s really annoying when you have gym

It’s not going to be a problem. I don’t use tampons either and the way you do it, is you wear a thick pad and underwear tight enough to hold it to your body firmly. wear shorts with leggings(underneath) or wear shorts with pants. That way you dont have to worry about leaks.

  3. MaryAnn says:

Well, bring an extra pair of panties with you when you’re on your period and you should definitely change your pad before gym. Consider trying tampons, once you get the hang of them you’ll be fine and wear a pad too just in case.

I remember those days in gym class..
I had a male teacher and every time i didn’t feel like running i just told him it was that time of the month he didn’t wanna hear the rest he would always say ok you’ll make it up next week. Its no big deal just tell your teacher, you rather tell your teacher and be embarrassed than have the proof under your shorts :]

  5. Chris says:

i would say get “big bulky pads” as u call them for gym and yes change them before and after gym. i had the same prob. but i would not tell the teacher then it would be odd between u and the teacher and u don’t want that for the next 3 months so my answer get the big ones for gym and use the other ones for the rest of the day and don’t tell the teacher.

You can buy athletic undershorts (they’re usually black spandex) that are tight and fit under your gym shorts, and wear longer, high absorbency pads with wings. That should help hold them the pad in place. Change your pad right before gym, and right afterward. You don’t necessarily have to use thicker pads – look for the name brand ones that advertise they are thin with ultra high absorbency.

The only gym class that ever permitted girls to do an alternate activity during periods when I was in school was swim class, but you can ask a teacher – I’m sure they have heard it before. Remember that you’re going to have to learn to live with your period for most the rest of your life – including work, walking to college, etc, so you want to get a good system down. There are few if any doctors notes for periods in the work world.

However, if you’re involved in sports at all, I really recommend that you try to gradually get more comfortable with tampons. I know that they are terrifying at first, but they will enable you to do a lot more during your period than you can while wearing pads. I suggest trying different brands (plastic applicators like Playtex are best!!), and slowly get used to them – maybe wear one once a period, when you’re at home, and you have plenty of time to relax and not freak out, first. I’ve found that when I run during my period, the safest bet is a thin pad combined with a tampon.

I’m sorry to hear about your problem. Just so you know, I was insanely scared to use tampons, the first time, too. But my advice would be, have your mom get the thinest tampon. They don’t absorb much, but here’s what I’m saying. If you wear that tampon, AND your thin overnight pad in your underwear, that should be enough to protect you and your clothing from leaks. Also, if your periods are uber heavy or if you have extremely painful cramps (like the kind that keep you home from school), I’d ask your mom about putting you on birth control pills. The pills can cause your periods to not be so heavy or painful. And if you do try the tampon, just remember, it doesn’t hurt AT ALL to insert a tampon. I grew up with my dad and not my mom, so I had to learn about them on my own. I just followed how the instructions in the box told me to do it. After it was in, I was like, That’s it??? It didn’t hurt AT ALL!! I promise! Also, I have noticed that when I wear tampons, my cramps aren’t as bad. When I was younger my cramps were horrid. After I started using the tampons they were at least a little more bearable. I hope I have helped.

I have a 13 yr old girl. She changes her pad before PE and wears tight undies. Her PE shorts are loose and long, in the winter she does wear a extra pair of small shorts under. ALWAYS buy pads with wings. On those heavy days wear a thicker pad, better safe than sorry. If someone is looking down there , shame on them!

Ok, so there are a lot of things you can do to help with periods and physical activity… Believe me, I’m a cross country runner I know it can be difficult to run when you have your period. =)

    1) If you can, layer your pants… Wear a pair of shorts underneath a pair of loose sweatpants or track pants. That way, if you do leak, the blood won’t bleed through as easily since you have on multiple layers of clothing. If pants are out of the question, wear a pair of spandex shorts (those super-tight, super short shorts volleyball players wear) underneath your normal gym shorts.

    2) I know you said you “can’t” use tampons but they help SO MUCH when you’re exercising. I used to be like you back when I first started getting my period, completely terrified of tampons. But I bought some Playtex Gentle Glides (they’re really slim & easy for first time users), and practiced using them. It took me a couple days but I eventually figured out how sure to use them and now i NEVER used pads.

    3) If you absolutely can’t use tampons I would just use a bigger and more absorbent pad. Trust me, no one will notice a little extra bulk under loose gym shorts.

good luck! and don’t worry, you’ll be fine. =) every single girl has gone through this at least once in her life, if not like hundreds of times. haha

    it depends

  11. Nona234 says:

try always infinity they super absorbant, and flexible, adn thin. but really it sounds like a tampon would work better.

  12. Brook says:

omg im 12 and im going through the exact situation! im starting gym tomorrow and im not on my period but im almost sure i will start by tomorrow anyway. so heres my game plan: wear super thin pads for the normal part of the day, then when gym comes, change it and still work hard in gym but dont do “your best” just act like your really tired or sick and just go slower. if your teacher keeps pushing you, then just tell him the truth. its okay it wont be the end of the world. and if friends ask who arent fully developed yet, just say my stomach hurts and i think im getting sick. i know that could work. i cant really wear like that spandex stuff just because its like midnight and i cant go buy any lol… but if you need to know how to hide pads thoughout the day, then put them in your bra or the waitband of your pants. thats what i do. and trust me i am terrified of tampons too. i really want to use them but rite when i try i chicken out. (im a huge baby :) ) but other than that just try a doctors note or just dont work as hard or tell a friend about it and im sure they can help you if they have started thier dumb period too. i hate periods… ok well i kinda need help too but i think i got it all worked out so good luck!

    12yrs younngg.

  14. Sameproblemgirl says:

I suggest infinite pads they are ultra thin BUT they absorb more than another pad I’ve tried
Also I don’t like changing infront of other girls when I’m on my period so I try to wear as many skirts as I can and wear my gym shorts under them if you want you can wear black spandex shorts under you gym shorts or normal pants it will also keep you pad closer to you and not slide around as much
I don’t really change my pad during school bc I normally don’t have school during m heaviest days (thank goodness bc my periods can get HEAVY) but changing before gym would be better

  15. Me says:

Hi I’m 13 and have been having my period since I was 8. I used pads till I was 10 and then started udon tampons and have never looked back! However if you don’t want to use tampons here’s what I did for gym class…
    Pads:
1)Wear ultra thin high absorbency pads.
2)change your pad right before gym class.
3)put tight period shorts under your uniform.
4)have a note ready to give to your teacher If you really cant do it.
    5)do gym like normal.
    6)have fun
    7) change back into your clothes
8)well done!!! U Just learnt to do gym with a pad.

    Tampon…
    1) insert the tampon in before u change.
    2) do gym.
    3)have fun.
4)well done!!! U just learnt how to do gym with a tampon.

I know your thinking omg what happens if my teacher finds out? Here’s how to cope…
    1)Have it planed out like:
I’m sorry I didn’t do my best cuz of some female issues but I’ll make it up next week.
    Or ask your friend
I’m sorry Elie didn’t try her best but she has been having some girly problems at the moment but she will make it up next week.
    2) make an excuse
I might not be doing my best today but I hurt my ankle at lunch.
    3) swimming… There is only one way:
I hope you understand but I can’t do swimming because I’m on my period and not yet comftible with tampons.

And that’s how to cope with you period in gym.

  16. Me says:

Btw I go to a all girls school and if you don’t have a tampon you just shout down the hall “has any one got a extra tampon I can have” girls schools are gr8

  17. anotinouse :) says:
