This morning on the Weather Channel they brought up the fact that 2007 so far, has seen significantly LESS tornados than has been the average of the past 2 or 3 previous years. It was suggested that this was a result of climate change.
I CLEARLY remember seeing on the Weather Channel this spring, as tornado season was starting, Dr. Heidi Cullen said that because of Global Warming, they were expecting to see an INCREASE in tornadic activity.
#1- How can a statistic, which shows a slight change over a small amount of time, be indicative of climate change. I mean- if there were 2,000 tornados last year and only 3 this year, yeah, something is going on. But they are talking about a difference which at best represents normal weather fluctuation and they automatically slap a controversial reason to it.
#2- Why is it that one minute, they decide Global warming will cause MORE storms, but when the exact opposite occurs, the SAME PEOPLE blame it on Global Warming still?
Global warming theory is so far reaching now that any outcome, good or bad, can be attributed to it. It’s a win-win for the die hard fundies that have faith in the movement.

They say the same things about tropical storms – they are reaching, plain and simple. Gore has to do something with his life after all.

because they are running on theory and basing theories on theories. Look at the last time El Nino came around, that has been happening for centuries but this time it was global warming that did it.
The global warming people try to have it both ways and the media lets them. If its warmer than usual its global warming but if its colder its global warming also. More hurricanes, global warming, fewer, guess what its global warming. These people have had it both ways forever now, isn’t it time we held their feet to the fire.
It’s like attributing everything to God but most people believe in God therefor they are not nuts, right?
If weather experts are so stupidly illogical about the world’s climate, we should certainly stop listening to the opinion of non-experts about ‘global warrming’.
Meteorologists are much better at telling us how the weather was than how it’s going to be.
I understand what you mean…I live in “tornado alley” and well, I remember them saying the there would more tornados and bigger tornados due to global warming….I havent seen the new story you stated about there being less…it does seem like tornados were less frequent, but hey the # number changes yearly….I am sure when there was that great 3 state tornado i believe way back that they didnt blame it on anything besides the conditions being right…..I think thats happening now….weather goes in cycles…just like they said there would be more hurricans and stronger ones….there hasnt been all that many this yr…..they have to cover their tracks…next thing you know they will be stating that they weather is hard to predict due to global warming…here is my suggestion just tell people to be ready for mother nature, she has her own way of doing things…..
The same things are said about hurricanes. I’ve lived in FL my whole life and for about the past at least 17 years we’ve heard “It’s going to be an active season this year, blah, blah, blah,” then they continue with their gloom and doom prophecies. Well, they are about 99% wrong every year and every year they blame either the increase of or the lack of hurricanes and tropical storms on the climate change. Geez, WHICH IS IT? Should we run for the hills or not?
Global warming is a hugely complex thing that has effects that we can’t predict because we don’t fully understand it. There are too many variables involved that we just don’t even know about yet, so we can’t factor them in.
And for the fundies who say there is no such thing – please explain why the arctic ice that was there for thousands of years disappeared over the past couple years.
Did you check out the hurricane predictions for last and this year. They predicted massive numbers of powerful storms for both seasons, and guess what, neither prediction panned out. They even changed the hurricane prediction for 2007 mid season in order to avoid looking stupid twice in a row. Since they can’t predict next year why should we believe a 50 year prediction will be any more accurate?
I broke a shoelace this morning. I’m sure that Global Warming caused it.
I don’t get it either. But in my country summers are getting hotter and winters are getting colder. It even snowed on july 9, and it hadn’t snowed since 1917. I’m starting to have the feeling they don’t have a clue about what’s going on either, but maybe that’s just me.

Just a few days ago they said that there were approx. 14% less tornadoes this year compared to an average year . Something like a norm of 1100+ to this years total of 950+ . They went on to note that although there have been slightly less tornadoes this year , the death rate is higher than the norm . Then we get to the part about how their count was ‘as of that date last week’ . Well , in normal years we don’t have many tornadoes after Oct. 15th , however this year we are. . . . yesterday , today, and tomorrow . So the number will actually jump up into about the norm for the year by month’s end .
Proving that they’ll take any stat , in any direction , and blame it on global warming . And ya know what the stupid thing is ? — We all know global warming is happening , but not one person can assert or prove that mankind caused it. . .. .. . . or that mankind can ‘fix’ it .
they probably are, in fact these are the people who say that we alarmists for thinking we are going to be attacked, even though we were 6 years ago, but don’t think that they aren’t alarmist for worrying about something that may take hundreds of year before it’s actually a problem.
just like some scientists predict that alot of the cliamte changes are due to a pattern and not global warming.
Well everything I was going to say has been stated quite well. Now my question is all these insurance companies that based their “rates” on these so called experts predictions, do you think anyone is going to get rebates? Whole dang thing has turned into the biggest marketing scam in the world. Carbon credits, increase in insurance, $30,000 hybrid cars, jeshhh let’s sell some snake oil!
1. It can’t. There’s not enough data for this year. As Earnest pointed out, the year is not up. Here, where I live, we have tornadoes the last three months of the year, the same as in the spring. And one year, there were as many tornadoes spotted in one day in my county as there were the previous year in a three month span.
